Keynote sessions to explore critical issues facing society and the profession

DENVER (February 2, 2022) – After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FPA Retreat 2022 returns April 25-28 at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa in Lost Pines, Texas. The intimate event will once again offer an opportunity for the financial planning community to hear from informative, impactful keynote speakers who challenge how attendees think about the profession and society.

FPA Retreat is an annual gathering of advanced financial planning practitioners who are passionate about refining their craft and committed to working together to shape the future of the profession. The event, held for decades before the pandemic, holds a unique place in the profession because of those who participate. Attendees bring unique financial planning perspectives and experiences and come with an openness to learn, desire to get out of their comfort zones and challenge their thinking.

“The slate of speakers who we will feature on the Retreat mainstage each bring unique experiences and insights that will shape how our members and attendees will think in the years to come,” says Patrick D. Mahoney, FPA chief executive officer. “Our staff has been partnering with our Retreat Task Force to design an event that will support our members and the work they do for clients and in their respective communities. These dynamic speakers will add to the experience our attendees will enjoy at Retreat this year.”

The slate of keynote speakers includes:

  • Alex Sheen: Founder of Because I Said I Would — a social movement and nonprofit dedicated to bettering humanity through promises made and kept. Sheen will share his insights and actionable ways to become better at fulfilling commitments, illustrate how integrity and keeping promises are forever interwoven, and how holding ourselves and each other accountable changes humanity for the better.
  • Austin Channing Brown: A leading voice on racial justice and author of “I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness.” Channing Brown will share tips and tools for honoring the dignity of people of color — told through the story of just one Black girl who has had to contend with the misery of diversity efforts but found great joy in the pursuit of human dignity.
  • Ashton Applewhite: A leading voice in the dismantling of ageism and the author of “This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism.” Applewhite will explore the foundations of ageism, how aging can be reframed personally and in society, and call attention to the need to raise awareness of age-based discrimination and stereotyping.
  • Michael Kitces, MSFS, MTAX, CFP®, CLU, CHFC, RHU, REBC, CASL: Financial planning luminary, chief financial planning nerd at Kitces.com, and co-founder of XY Planning Network. From building and scaling businesses and the profession's future to the intersects of financial planning relative to his life journey and everything in between, Kitces will be unplugged, unfiltered, and ready to share his story in an open, honest, ask me anything session.

“Alex, Austin, Ashton, and Michael are recognized authorities within their respective fields. They are doers and powerful advocates who will positively impact our attendees this year,” says Patrick D. Mahoney, FPA chief executive officer.

Early bird registration has been extended until February 14, which provides a $200 discount off registration. Considering the continuing concerns about COVID-19, FPA will provide a full refund on any registration if requested.
