DENVER (July 20, 2023) – The Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) is pleased to announce the line-up of presenters that will participate in the Journal of Financial Planning's Research Showcase as part of FPA Annual Conference 2023 in Phoenix, Ariz., Sept. 27-29.

The Research Showcase enables financial planning professionals to hear directly from researchers and academicians as they present new research that is shaping the future of financial planning. The Showcase, which will take place on the first day of the Conference on Sept. 27, allows attendees to learn about topics that are at the forefront of financial planning research, ask the researchers questions about the research, and provide valuable input that researchers can utilize in developing full research papers.

"The Research Showcase has become a mainstay of the FPA Annual Conference experience for our attendees looking for the latest research that challenges their thinking and assumptions as financial planning professionals," says Patrick D. Mahoney, FPA chief executive officer. "This program consistently attracts the best and brightest from research and academia who are working on the cutting edge to explore issues and trends that keep financial planners and the profession ahead of the curve."

As a result of a 'call for papers' in the Spring, the Journal of Financial Planning editorial staff received 21 extended abstracts for consideration. A double-blind peer review process was used to identify meaningful presentations for the Showcase on various topics, similar to the Journal's process for publishing research papers. A team of peer reviewers assessed each abstract, and the Journal's editorial staff then selected the six finalists to present their work as part of the Research Showcase at FPA Annual Conference 2023.

The Research Showcase presenters on Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. MT, will include:

  • Did Crypto Make Young Investors Overconfident?: Brianne Smith, CPA, PFS, ABV, assistant professor at Auburn University—Montgomery, will explore the impact of cryptocurrency investments on the overconfidence of young investors.
  • The Age of Influencers: Risks for Consumers and Opportunities for Planners: Brian Walsh, Ph.D., CFP®, director of advice and planning at SoFi, will examine how financial planners can use social media to expand their reach, influence financial behavior, and help protect consumers.
  • A Simplified Approach to After-Tax Portfolio Selection: Rex Macey, CEO of Red Tortoise, LLC, will explore a method to maximize expected after-tax wealth while simultaneously allocating assets, locating assets, and rebalancing.

The Research Showcase presenters on Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. MT, will include:

  • Tax Loss Harvesting: Check Your Frequency: David Blanchett, Ph.D., CFA, CFP®, head of retirement research at PGIM, will explore how harvesting frequency affects loss realization across different market return environments, with an additional focus on the portfolio implications of different approaches as well as the potential benefits of a TLH strategy using sector ETFs.
  • Evaluating the Impact of Emergency Savings on Mental, Behavioral, and Future Goal Outcomes: Timothy M. Todd, Ph.D., J.D., associate dean for faculty development and scholarship at Liberty University School of Law, will examine the conventional wisdom in financial planning about emergency savings and its impact on mental, behavioral, and future goal outcomes.
  • Professional Financial Advice and Investor Behavior During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Zhikun Liu, CFP®, wealth and retirement financial planning senior researcher at the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), will explore data on over five million defined contribution retirement plan participants to evaluate the different reactions (by participant type) to the extreme market volatility caused by the COVID-19 pandemic during the first quarter of 2020.

"We're excited to showcase research from six presenters who will share their latest work on perennial and evolving topics for financial planners, including cryptocurrency, social media, tax optimization, behavioral finance, and the value of professional financial advice. Peer-reviewed research is fundamental to a competent and ethical profession, and we're grateful to the researchers for their contributions to the field," says Danielle Andrus, editor of the Journal of Financial Planning.
