About the presentation:  This program will feature details of the new law creating a tax incentivized savings vehicle for first-time home purchases in the state of Michigan. The learning objectives will include:

  • The current and future state of Michigan’s housing market as it relates to first-time buyers.
  • The policy behind the creation of the new law and similar programs in other states.
  • Details on Public Acts 5 and 6 of 2022 creating the First-time Homebuyer Savings Account Act.
  • Review of Department of Treasury guidance and frequently asked questions.
  • Lay out the steps for individuals to open the accounts.
  • Answering questions from meeting participants.

About the presenters:

Brad Ward is the Vice President of Public Policy and Legal Affairs for the Michigan Realtors®. He has been with the association since 2001, earning his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, and law degree from Wayne State University.  Brad is the chief lobbyist for the Realtors® involved in the development and implementation of legislation for the residential & commercial real estate industry. In addition to Brad’s time at the Michigan legislature, he volunteers on several public advocacy boards, including Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP), Michigan Chamber Tax Policy Committee, and the John Drypen Foundation.  Brad is currently the Immediate Past Chair of the Governmental Affairs Directors (GAD) for the National Association of Realtors® (NAR).

James Iodice provides a unique perspective having a strong commercial background and currently sells and leases in both the residential and commercial markets. James is an associate broker and has been selling and leasing real estate since early 2000. He has had the opportunity to serve as a member of the Michigan Realtors® Public Policy Committee 2012, 2013, 2014 is currently the 2015 Vice Chair, and 2016 Chair. Iodice currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Greater Metropolitan Association of Realtors® and was elected as the 2016 Treasurer. He is a Presidents Circle member of RPAC and acts as the Legislative Liaison to the Commercial Board of Realtors®. His local committee work includes participation in grievance, RPAC, Governmental Affairs, Member Services, and Finance, and has been appointed to the Waterford Township Economic Development Corporation.  Iodice is an 3rd Degree Black Belt and an avid martial artist. His civic involvement includes extensive participating in the local Relay for Life as a Team Captain and holding varied chair positions for the past 6 years.
